Amanda Ruiz, MD

Bilingual, bi-cultural, building bridges for years, Dr. Ruiz has a hard-won reputation for bridging the gap in difficult cases when communication has broken down.

Medical knowledge: Dr. Ruiz is one of southern California’s only double board certified, nationally known forensic and clinical psychiatrists. Her experience includes geriatric psychopharmacology and medication management in inpatient, sub-acute, and outpatient settings. She specializes in polypharmacy and the abuse of prescription medications.

Law enforcement consulting: Dr. Ruiz is a member of several teams that regularly consult for the U.S. Department of Justice and the United States Department of Homeland Security on a wide variety of topics. In addition, she works as an California Parole Outpatient Clinic psychiatrist, assisting both in interviewing parolees as well as in assessing their dangerousness and their need for medication.

Media relations expertise: Having consulted for Spanish-language television news outlets on several occasions including Telemundo and Univision, Dr. Ruiz has been sought on several occasions for her opinion and advise on the reasons why persons in our community make the decisions they do.

Academic credentials: Dr. Ruiz trained in psychiatry at the University of CA, San Diego after she graduated from medical school at the University of Wisconsin, Madison on scholarship.  She completed a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at the University of CA, San Francisco Psychiatry and the Law Program, under the sage training of Dr. Renee Binder and Dr. Emily Keram.

Current interests: Continuous quality improvement in mental health medicine.  She is currently completing courses towards a Masters in Business Administration with a focus in medical management.
